2012 Volkswagen E-Bugster Speedster Concept

Electric vehicles such as motor show concepts and production models often have long been a tradition of unique styling and experimental materials. Fortunately (depending on who you ask), this is changing. Cars like the BMW 1 Series ActiveE and the MINI E stated that the futuristic modern design engines and can get along, and the Nissan Leaf EV is a step in the right direction.

Earlier this year, Volkswagen E-Bugster the conventional drive train of the New Beetle has found himself switched to an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. Now it is back for the 2012 Beijing Auto Show, in convertible form. Example of what probably gets debut as regular gasoline Beetle convertible, the two-seat E-Bugster improved Speedster the same package as the hardtop styling concept, including large wheels, new bumpers and a rear spoiler ducklip.

The topic gets under the skin, with the same power of 85kW and 270nm electric motor coupled with a lithium-ion battery 28.3kWh. With this heart, VW promises a 0-100km / h in 10.8 seconds - about two and a half-second deficit to the normal 2.5-liter petrol engine speeds.

Driving range of a charge is listed at around 160 kilometers, and a charge of 80 percent can be achieved in less than 30 minutes. Whether we are one of the e-Bugster cars on display in showrooms remains unclear. Volkswagen has already confirmed a number of variations in the electric-current model lines, but the beetles have to figure out an EV production plans. With regard to the regular convertible Beetle, we need an international debut in the coming year to see during the regular hardtop Beetle is expected to hit Australia later this year.

2013 Volkswagen Up Four Door

In the U.S., calls the idea of a car smaller than Mini-Mental images of a narrow interior, no trunk, and wheezing, gutless engine. (The fact that the for two one of the few smart cars for less than a Mini supports this impression is sold.) It has always been a different story in other parts of the world, enjoy a number of such cars a cult like following that. Small car from Volkswagen sometimes with this kind of immortality (read a short story of the little VWS) flirted, and the company hopes will be introduced next spring on similar success with its new Up!, A new small car in Europe.

For the 139.4-inch length, the Up! has an unusually long wheelbase of 95.3 inches. It is also quite wide 64.6 cm. The four wheels are pushed to the four corners will help to improve not only the relationship, but perhaps most importantly, the creation of more space for passengers. Nine cubic meters of loadspace, a figure that increased to 34 with the folded rear seat. The rear seats in other cars of this size are often downhill, because they are totally inhospitable to leave, but the rear seats of the Up! provides a reasonable amount of headroom. If the first row of people pushing their way to the back seat, rear-seat legroom is fine too.

Driver and front passenger are spoiled anyway. The Up! has a great track-out space in all directions and a large, well-read instrument panel. For the HVAC and stereo controls are ergonomically placed high up! (Unfortunately we had only once) in the center console. The plastic sheets are cheap, but they are so well designed and assembled so that the impression they give is anything but cheap. Even the bare metal on the doors looks cool, especially with the displays dash pad in the same color. At the top of the center console, an optional navigation system in cooperation with suppliers, the Navigon is out of the car can be taken if you want to explore a city on foot, developed. The interface is nicely designed, but can be more intuitive, and the system got us back in the wrong direction. After trouble with the touch screen and keyboard in frustration for a few minutes, we just switched off and picked up a paper map.

Power comes from the first iteration of all the new EA211 engine family that will eventually consist of three-and four-cylinder turbo in the atmosphere and forms. Currently, the Up! is provided with two similar atmospheric 1.0-liter three-Bangers. The base model is 60 hp at 5000 rpm the engine makes 75 more in 6200. The maximum torque of both motors is 70 lb-ft from 2000 to 4300 revolutions per minute. In the city, the less powerful engine is perfectly adequate, but the difference is only noticeable if you are really sure both of them.

We took the 75-HP Up! for an extensive tour of Wolfsburg, where she developed (it is built in Bratislava, Slovakia) was. Despite the lack of a balance shaft, the three units is a smooth and pleasant sound with a high spinning. It's just not very flexible. Starts are a pretty dull affair, and although the three speeds on the 6000-rpm redline smoothly and without much fuss, it has little enthusiasm to do that. It takes time to accumulate at any speed. Even with the more powerful engine, must be 0-to-60 mph acceleration still is 12.4 seconds, with the 60-horse engine need 13.6. Speeds are considered a top-107 and 99 mph, respectively. At least they did not use much fuel. The optional start / stop system, the Up! should return the equivalent of 36 mpg on the EPA combined cycle. (For reference, a Fiat 500 is a manual with an overall rating of 33 mpg.) The force is on the front wheels via a five-speed transmission with a lesson or two might of Honda in the precision and feeling to learn. A single coupling will be offered automatically shortly after takeoff. In contrast to silky-DSG from VW, the single-clutch gearbox traditionally rough positive, although the company promises will be different this time.''

The Up! 'S-chassis set-up is surprisingly comfortable. Even long journeys would be nice, thanks to the relatively long wheelbase and dampers that do a commendable job of filtering out bad potholes and bumps. The downside is considerable role. The Up! does not feel as agile as we were hoping for a little VW, and the controls are perhaps a bit too easy. But we recognize how unremarkable the standard system kicks in. If you push the stability of the car, the smell of the brakes, disc brakes, rear drum brakes, you tell the system works.

The really good news is that VW customers who expect a more sporty setup. VW chief research and development, Ulrich Hackenberg confirmed that a sport suspension will be offered soon. In addition, Volkswagen is planning a series of Up! Derivatives, including a five-door, all-electric model, sister of Seat and Skoda models, and perhaps even a one-box mini-mini-minivan mensen mover think if VW Bulli concept. Also, athletic body variants are possible, and if not confirm VW, we suspect it is a full up! GTI is a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder appear in the not too distant future. Appears at the time, the derivative, we hope execs are their thoughts on the small hatch in the U.S. There are currently incapable of producing any plans, said Hackenberg, but he adds that the car could be federalized to our market without much trouble.

We love the mature nature of the Up! And its clear and sharp styling works well. The rear view with its large windows looks very modern, and the headlamps and grille form a face, friendly, is not too sweet. The Up! is a practical car without the sacrifice we are afraid of this class. Not only that, but, like the modern Mini, which is cool. However, we want to wait for the turbo.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo

At first glance, this new Beetle not call it the New Beetle looks like a GTI carries an inflated jacket, pack, because it's the same 200-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and six-speed dual-clutch transmission automatically does. Democracy and wheels, rear spoiler, copper, and "Turbo" badge press the picture of a car, eager to prove it for serious. But a few things to keep him back.

No. 1 is dynamic. While the Beetle Turbo swaps the low-income rear torsion of the plebs siblings for a multi-link setup and our car is the sportiest melody was present, a no-cost option, it still feels uncoordinated in the hard disk. There is more than first understeer in a GTI. And broken pavement brings brief impressions that could come back to, but also as a mild oscillatory wobble, qualities, dragging brakes increased. The Beetle rides smoothly and comfortably, yes, but it is too soft to deliver the planted feel of the GTI. There are pronounced acceleration squat, too. A softer and more likely to squat IER "comfort" suspension should be available as you read this.

No. 2 is the DSG gearbox and elsewhere, but here saddled with a wider spread between the ratios and efficiency-at-all-costs upshift programming. The Beetle 'box deliberately hunt at higher speeds and displacements are unclear, even in Sport mode. We longed for the manual. Combine the DSG's behavior with a rotten gas pedal, and the best way for the 2.0-liter crackin 'to get just mat the gas from one source.

But such a launch is working: the beetle squirts to 60 mph in a quick 6.3 seconds, equipped DSG GTI 0.2 behind a three-door and 0.5 seconds quicker than the Jetta GLI. The GTI weighs 41 pounds less than the Beetle, GLI 78 more. And the beetle has other virtues, including its well-fixed seats, well maintained and spacious interior and the evil cartoon style that is robust enough in the sequence? It may, super cute New Beetle.

Our car with a sunroof, navigation, improved audio and the DSG gearbox was fitted, was the bottom line is $ 29,865 and a GTI with similar equipment costs about the same. But the GTI is a better value, just because it can be used as an outlet for fantasies circuit and a comfortable serve daily driver. ? This maximum stability trimmed the beetle is really only for the latter it is a good car, but it is not serious.

2012 Volkswagen Passat R-Line

Can produce only a few car manufacturers do the kind of sport sedans, the Germans. And for most automobile manufacturers in the country, these performance vehicles identified with a letter (or a combination of a pair): M for BMW, Audi RS, AMG Mercedes-Benz ... and R for Volkswagen. The relatively new performance division in Wolfsburg has now got his hands on the Passat, and these are the results. Well, almost but not quite. You see, this is not a full-on R Performance version, but an R-Line model is the mid-size sedan (and wagon) a sportier look and improved suspension, but moods without the motor would expect you to work with it.

It is not the same as the Passat here. Our America (Chattanooga, Tennessee, to be exact). This is based on European models, and as such is available (in Europe, anyway) in both the sedan and wagon form. 2012 Volkswagen Passat

John and Helen Taylor have recently completed a record run in a 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI started. The duo traveled from Houston, Texas, Sterling, Virginia, filled a 1,626.1-mile stretch on a single low-sulfer diesel fuel. The previous record was afraid about 100 miles. Baggage weighing 120 pounds, the Taylors on their two-day trip, from May 3 - May 5 was accompanied you travelled with a maximum of 14 hours per day, and not to drive at night. "We are delighted to have broken the record for the longest distance driven on one tank of fuel," said John Taylor.

"The Passat TDI was the perfect car for the trip, he offers many interior and cargo space, but is economical enough to help us, this record." Power for the 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI comes from a 2.0 - liter turbocharged diesel 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque makes. Although it is rated at 43 mpg, the Taylors manage to 84.1 mpg average. The vehicle was calibrated to a nationally recognized testing laboratory in Houston for the trip, where the speedometer and odometer is are taken, while police monitored the fuel. Upon arrival, the tank was opened and verified by a Virginia sheriff's deputy.

It takes a certain driving style in order to achieve this level of fuel consumption, but the Taylors actually hold workshops on how the technique down, and have 90 fuel economy world record. So if fuel is to buy a major concern for your next car, hybrid forgets to just buy a TDI and get the power, too.
